The movie grew to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, as well as the third highest-grossing anime film of all time (under Spirited Away and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train). The film told the story of a high school boy who befriends a girl with the power to control the weather through prayer. Weathering With You, Shinkai’s most recent film, opened in Japan in 2019. The film will be produced by CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. Finally, Takumi Tanji (who did background art in the previous two films) will be stepping in as art director. Another returning name is Kenichi Tsuchiya, who worked on the previous two films as a key animator, though with Suzume no Tojimari he will be the animation director. Masayoshi Tanaka is returning to work with Shinkai for designing the characters, he previously worked with the director as character designer for both Your Name and Weathering With You. Shinkai is credited with directing the film, creating the original story, and writing the screenplay. Shinkai elaborated that closing doors can refer to tying loose ends or finishing something. It is a road trip movie around the country of Japan, it’s a story about “closing doors” rather than opening them, and it’s a reason to visit the movie theater. The two end up going on a mysterious journey which leads to doors all around Japan opening and bringing trouble from the other side.Īccording to Anime News Network, Shinkai stated that there are three important points about the film. The two travel to the mountains and find a mysterious door surrounded by ruins. Suzume no Tojimari follows a 17-year-old girl from a quiet town in Kyushu, one day she comes across a young man looking for a door. Shinkai went on to describe the film as a modern adventure story, an action film, and a road movie.
